Because the U.S. Doesn't Give a Fuck About Family

One of THREE countries that does not give paid maternity leave. Yes, the “leader of the free world” has the same family leave policy as Papua New Guinea and Swaziland.

Bryan Magee’s In-Depth, Uncut TV Conversations With Famous Philosophers

cjmarshall, openculture.com

Bryan Magee comes from a tradition that produced some of the twentieth century’s most impressive media personalities: that of the scholarship-educated, Oxbridge-refined, intellectually omnivorous, occasionally office-holding,…

A great collection of conversations with and about philosophers.

Dan Colman, openculture.com

Last week we played for you the only known recording of Sigmund Freud’s voice (1938). Now it’s time to revive the voice of another intellectual giant, Albert Einstein. In this recording, the physicist offers the briefest explanation of …

Sociologist Barbara Rothman asked a group of mothers to describe the movements of their fetuses in the last three months of pregnancy. Among the women who didn’t know the sex of their baby while they were pregnant, there was no particular pattern to the way that (what turned out to be) male and female babies were described. But women who knew the sex of their unborn baby described the movements of sons and daughter’s differently.

Glenn Greenwald on the obscenity that is "collateral damage"

“You can’t just spend year after year piling up the corpses of children and credibly insist that it has no bearing on who you are. That’s particularly true when, as is the case in Afghanistan, the cause of the war is so vague as to be virtually unknowable.”
